1st 9 weeks-week 8

Dear Family,
Let’s show our 1st grade Sommer spirit and wear our purple class shirts on Fridays!

As you know, we take Brain Breaks at school by dancing along, exercising, and moving with GoNoodle.  One of the groups that we dance with, KooKooKangaRoo, will be at the Domain’s Amy Donovan Plaza on October 15 from 5-6 PM.  There will be some other programs going on there starting at 3 PM as well.  I plan on being there at 5 PM to see KooKooKangaRoo!  Admission is free! (Your kids asked me to share this information with you.)

Next Week...
Math: This week we will be reviewing Time to the Hour. (We will do half hour later in the year.) On Monday we will make our own clocks and students will review daily with these clocks.  Afterwards, the students will be playing different Time Math Games for practice.

Science: This week, we will wrap up our unit on Forms of Energy. Students will be learning about sound energy and will review light and heat energy before our unit test at the end of the week.

Reading with Integrated Social Studies: Students  will learn how technology affects  daily life, past and present, by describing: how technology changes the ways families live, how technology changes communication, transportation, and recreation, and how technology changes the way people work.  We will  also discuss how to distinguish among past, present, and future and describe and measure calendar time by days, weeks, months, and years. We will be reviewing retelling and sequencing of events in relation to stories as well.

Writing:  This week students will continue working on their small moment stories that were started last week.  Mini lessons will be taught teaching students how to look for things that could be changed to make their stories more detailed and appealing to their readers.  By Friday every child will have a published piece that they will share out to the class.

Campus Announcements…
From the nurse...
Our district has teamed up with Healthy Schools, to offer your child a free Flu Vaccine regardless of your health insurance coverage.  We’ve made it as convenient as possible to safeguard your child against the flu this season.  Be on the look-out for your child to bring home their “Teach Flu a Lesson” consent form this week.  All you have to do is fill out the form, and have your child return it to his or her teacher. We will take care of the rest and remember there’s no cost involved to you.   The Healthy Schools team will be at our school vaccinating students on    Monday October 30th from 8 a.m to 11:30 am.
